3 Air Conditioning Tips To Conserve Energy And Save Money

Posted on

Air conditioning is one of the greatest inventions of all time. It keeps you cool and comfortable in even the hottest weather. Air conditioning is truly a modern marvel but it can also get pricey and use a lot of energy when it is used all the time and left on. This does not need to be the case. Luckily, there are several things that can be done to help keep energy usage and costs down. By abiding by these tips, you can still stay comfortable without the high costs. All it takes is a little knowledge and planning.

  1. Use the AC Fan and Other Fans. The compressor helps to take warm air and creates the cold air that runs through your house. Not surprisingly, the compressor is the part of the AC that takes up the most energy.  Most AC units have the ability to circulate air through your house without actually turning on the compressor. This can be done when it is a little cooler outside. You can also turn on ceiling fans and other fans in your home that can help move the air and keep your home cool. By using fans and not turning on the compressor, you will save on energy costs.
  2. Turn up the Thermostat. Another way to conserve energy and not spend so much money during the summer months is to turn up your thermostat to as high as you can comfortably bear. In fact, it is recommended that in the summer, you set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and around 85-88 degrees when you are not home. There are many smart thermostats or programmable thermostats that can set the temperature accordingly based on when you are home or away. These can save you quite a bit of money throughout the year because the AC will only come on when it is needed.
  3. New AC Unit. Many people will have AC units that are very old and inefficient. Typically, if your AC is over 10 years old, you should consider having it replaced with a newer and more efficient system. This will allow you to save not only on energy costs because of better efficiency but also on frequent and expensive repairs.

These are just a few tips to help you stay comfortable and cool during even the hottest summer months without breaking the bank and expending a lot of energy.
